Wanda is a 1973 graduate of Algona High School, where she grew up the oldest of 4 children, 3 girls and a boy.  Her dad worked for Pioneer Seed Corn, and her mom stayed home taking in ironing. Her parents live in Algona. After a year of Community College, she worked briefly before meeting Steve.

Steve hails from Broken Bow, Nebraska, the oldest of 4 boys. His Dad was a Principal and moved to Cherokee when Steve was 3 ½. His Mother stayed at home during the boys childhood and later sold women’s clothing, is deceased. His father is in Assisted Living in Cherokee.

Steve graduated from Cherokee in 1970. After 2 years of college, he began working in construction.  After a year at Iowa State, where he studied Construction Engineering, he returned to Cherokee where for 8 years he supervised the building of water sewage treatment plants. He then went to work for the State of Iowa at the Mental Health Institute as Plant Operations Manager.  He did this for 19 years, before moving to Atlantic in 2003.   Presently Steve works as an Account Consultant for the Iowa Communication Network, which is really a state run telephone company.  Steve works out of their home.

Since their marriage Wanda has worked in Banking, doing a little bit of everything, including as a teller, Branch Supervisor and Loan Officer. They met in Cherokee when Wanda was visiting a friend there.  It was a fast romance as they met in September, 1974 and were married on December 28.  They honeymooned in Chicago.

They have 2 boys, Seth who is married to Kassidi and lives in Sioux City with 2 girls, and Timothy married to Cassie in Bloomington, Illinois, with 3 girls and one boy.

Both Steve and Wanda are lifelong Missouri Synod Lutherans.  Steve has served in almost every office in the church. Once in Cherokee the Pastor had to leave suddenly one week end and told Steve he left a sermon on the desk. It consisted of 3 sentences!  He was President of the congregation there for 2 terms.  Wanda has also been active in the church, including LWML.  She is currently in charge of selling the cards at the church for Peace Circle.

Wanda’s involvement in the community includes Business and Professional Women, where she has served as President.  They have both received awards from Governor Branstad.  Steve was given the 1995 Individual Star Award for Department of Human Services and Wanda received an award for Volunteerism.

Wanda likes to read, walk and do craft work.  Steve does a lot of computer work (He built his own) likes to play golf, fish, and do woodworking, recently building a rolling kitchen island and other carpentry—built their home in Cherokee.

Wanda is dealing with Metastatic breast cancer and is currently receiving 3 types of treatment.  It seems to be going well as can be.  Treatment will be long term.  One of her goals is to continue living!

The Schwier’s have traveled a lot, including several trips to Mexico and Hawaii.   They would like to do more, including a trip to Germany someday.  Of course they spend as much time as possible with grandchildren and parents. We wish them God’s blessings, with a special prayer for Wanda’s health needs.
